Prolific South African striker, Benni Mccarthy came to Europe via Ajax Amsterdam's feeder club, Ajax Cape Town.
He made an instant impact and quickly became a crowd favorite in Amsterdam with a very good strike rate, scoring twice in the UEFA Cup and winning the Dutch title in 1998. He joined Celta Vigo for six million euros, but didn't find his form there till he joined FC Porto on loan.
He made his mark there quickly and was subsequently brought back to Celta but still didn't find his form over there, being used as a starter twice and a substitute over a dozen other times.
He was finally sold to FC Porto the following year, and became the highest scorer for Porto in the league, ending with 20 goals.
In 2004, Everton forced to sell Rooney were looking to sign Benni McCarthy but on the final day of the transfer was denied by FC Porto, and it didn't help any matters to McCarthy that the new manager was Vitor Fernandez, his previous manager at Celta Vigo.
